Project Idea and Goal

As part of the course Exhibition Design and Media Technology 2, we developed an interactive exhibition exhibit that addresses typical color stereotypes, such as "blue for boys, pink for girls." Our goal was to challenge these societal stereotypes in a playful way and highlight how deeply rooted they are in our perception.

Concept and Implementation

The exhibit consists of two main components:

Physical Installation:
We displayed stereotypical children's clothing to grab visitors' attention. An interactive wall with drawers symbolizes "compartmentalized thinking." By pulling out the drawers, visitors discover information on topics such as gender marketing, the Pink Tax, or gender reveal parties. At the end, a color stereotype from the gender reveal context is presented—but instead of revealing the baby's gender, visitors receive additional facts about the topic.

Digital Media Technology:
An interactive timeline allows visitors to navigate through historical milestones of color stereotypes using a slider. This helps them understand how these stereotypes have evolved over time.

Design & Technology

  • Design Approach: To emphasize the stark contrast between pink and blue stereotypes, only black, white, pink, and blue were used throughout the exhibit. This minimalist palette reinforced the societal divide in color associations.

  • Technology Tools: Used Figma to design the interface and ProtoPie/Blockdots for implementing interactive elements like the slider-controlled timeline.

My Role

  • Content Layout and Design: Designed and structured the visual content for the exhibit, including printed materials, informational displays, and the graphics on the physical installation.

  • Design of Printed Elements: Created the designs for the labels, prints, and explanatory materials featured on the exhibit's physical components.

  • Digital Interaction: Designed the interface using Figma and implemented it into ProtoPie and Blockdots to create the interactive timeline.

  • Collaboration on Exhibit Construction: Worked closely with my peers to conceptualize, design, and build the physical exhibit, ensuring a cohesive integration of analog and digital elements.
